I believe it occured either the first or second winter...we moved in late May of 1970. I was only 13 or 14 years old at the time. I had just inherited a Stevens double-barrel 12 guge shotgun from my grandpa. Being raised in NW Indiana, I was used to heavy snowfalls but this winter in Mississippi, we had an unusually heavy snow, 6-8 inches deep. Fact is, I have never seen another snowfall this heavy, here in the south. Anyway, I awoke this cold winter morning to find this snow and thought I'd go behind my home and try and kick up a covey or two of quail. My old American Pointer bird dog, Sport, was eager to get going. I remember that he was really spirited that morning and he eagerly jumped and leaped along down the hill to the bottom. We farmed this land and had just harvested a crop of soybeans. Dad always left a little at the ends of the rows to help the quail winter over. As we reached the end of the hill, we turned right toward an old overgrown hedgerow...figuring that the birds were probably holding tight in that cover. Sport was out ahead and was slowing down with his tail high in the air. He usually did this when he winded the birds..prior to him locking on point. Suddenly,he reeled around and came running back at me in a dead run, looking back over his shoulder and ran right into my legs. This behavior stunned me and as I turned to look at him, he was continuing to run until he was completely out of sight. I really did not have a clue what to make of all this and eased forward toward the hedgerow until I got to the spot where his footprints stopped. Along about this time, I started feeling very nauseated to the point of actually getting the dry heaves. I sort of bent my knees and leaned forward but I still felt sick at my stomach. I then started looking a couple feet from where Sport's tracks had ended and saw something that both puzzled and frightened me. There in the snow were four or five sets of five toed tracks that looked human except that they were much larger. I recall putting my size 11 boot into one of the tracks and was amazed that it was much longer and wider than my foot. If I had to estimate the size, I would say 16-18 inches long and 7-8 inches at the ball. The heel was probably 4-5 inches wide. My first thought was, "What the heck is someone doing out here in the snow, barefooted?" Then, I was very nervous & had that feeling of being watched. The thoughts of my dog turning and running away came and I looked to where I saw the last footprint enter the hedgerow. I also remember feeling like the shotgun I had would not offer me much protection. Needless to say, I started backing away from there and did not take my eyes off that area until I reached the foot of the hill. At that point, I jogged and ran the rest of the way back home. When I made it to our yard, I found Sport cowering inside his dog house and trembling violently, almost like when you see an animal having a seizure. I never told my family about this experience till years later. I felt like I would not be taken seriously and I never did go back in that bottom without another person with me. I lived in this place for another 10 years or so and never saw or heard anything that I could not explain. Today, I know that what I saw was a set of Sasquatch footprints and believe that "it" was still very close to that grown-up ditch bank and more likely watching me and my dog the entire time. I also believe that "it" did something to make me nauseous....although I never smelled anything abmormal. Are You A Hunter = yes |
